UCI Illuminations presents: Public Reading by David Henry Hwang - Irvine
Thursday, November 14, 2019

David Henry Hwang is one of the most influential American playwrights working in the theater today. His works include M. Butterfly, Chinglish, Golden Child, The Dance and the Railroad, and Soft Power.

The public talk of David Henry Hwang will follow a brief “prologue” performed by Theatre Woks, UCI’s Asian American theatre group. The prologue and talk will begin at 5pm at Crystal Cove Auditorium, UCI Student Center.

In addition to David Henry Hwang’s public talk, UCI is delighted to feature an afternoon symposium on his work, The Worlds of David Henry Hwang, featuring Esther Kim Lee (Duke University, Theater Studies), Asian American theatre scholar and author of The Theatre of David Henry Hwang, Daphne Lei (UCI Drama), and Julia Lee (UCI Asian American Studies). A Cornerstone Theater Company presents: What Happens Next - Irvine

In What Happens Next, Bonnie, an idealistic but inexperienced acting teacher, finds herself paired with a group of veterans as part of a drama therapy program. As she is confronted with the reality of her reluctant new students, Bonnie struggles to find a way to build trust and find common ground.

Written by award-winning playwright Naomi Iizuka and directed by Cornerstone’s Artistic Director Michael John Garcés, What happens Next was first performed in association with La Jolla Playhouse as part of their Beyond the Walls series at the Challenged Athlete’s Foundation in San Diego, for an audience of veterans, their families and the general public, and benefiting Operation Rebound.

Holiday Home Tour and Gift Boutique - Tustin/ Santa Ana

Plymouth Rock N' Run 5k - Anaheim Hills
Thanksgiving Day

The 5k, 10k and a new 10 mile course is around the perimeter of the Yorba Regional Park, and the Santa Ana River trail. There will be a finish-line festival with silent auction, costume contest, food, fun and more!

All of the funds raised by sponsors and race participants will directly support the Reeve-Irvine Research Center at UC, Irvine.

California's Largest Thanksgiving Day Run Event - The Dana Point Turkey Trot - One of America's Most Scenic Runs... hosted by The Dana Point Chamber of Commerce. Tour the beautiful beach, majestic cliffs and coves of Dana Point.

This flat, scenic race features a 10k, 5k and Kids Gobble Wobble. Participants will receive a shirt and medal.

Chance Theater presents: Anne of Green Gables
November 29 - December 29, 2019

Generations of readers have adored the best-selling novel Anne of Green Gables, and now the musical adaptation of the beloved book hits the stage at Chance Theater. The Cuthberts expect to adopt a boy, but receive, instead, a red-haired, wide-eyed orphan girl. Though clever young Anne Shirley has a penchant for getting into trouble, she works her way into the hearts of her adoptive parents as well as the residents of rural Prince Edward Island. It’s a heartwarming story for the whole family.

Whale Watching - Dana Point & Newport Beach

Gray Whales migrate annually along the west coast of North America. They can be seen from the Orange County coast from December through April.

Holiday Trains at the Nixon Library - Yorba Linda
November 25 through January 5, 2020

This fan-favorite, annual Christmas celebration will feature large displays of whistling miniature model trains and the annual Pat Nixon White House Gingerbread House.

Beginning Monday, November 25, 2019, guests to the Nixon Library will enjoy the popular special exhibit Apollo 11: One Giant Leap for Mankind and tour a whistling wonderland of TRAINS, featuring a dozen bustling tracks, 500 square feet of hand-crafted model scenery, and five expertly-designed layouts including the all-new Rocket Railroad space-themed layout, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

Annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade
Newport Beach/Newport Bay
December 18 – 22, 2019

FREE to the public. The boat parade will light up the harbor for five consecutive nights. The parade starts at Collins Island at 6:30 p.m. and will last approximately three and a half hours over 250 ships participate in the parade along with hundreds of water front estates. Providing the backdrop for the parade is the Ring of Lights waterfront home and business decorating competition. FREE for spectators, entry fee for participating boats. Over million and half people view the parade each year.

For those of you that would like to be in parade both Newport Landing and Davey's Locker will offer 3 general admission cruises nightly every night of the parade that are a part of the actual parade. Viewing the parade from a ship means that you see all of the parade and homes in full decor that line the waterfront. General admission tickets can be reserved over the phone.

Discovery CubePresents: Science of Gingerbread - Santa Ana
November 23, 2019 - January 6, 2020

Aprons on, scientists! You’ll head into the world of the classic holiday dessert and find out how science plays a crucial role in the kitchen. Our favorite goodies don’t come together magically though. We use heat, math, engineering and other important components in order to bake and create the confections everyone loves. Build a candy car out of holiday treats and then compete, sweet-to-sweet in the Gingerbread Derby, Santa Claus will make special appearances, and other fa, la, la activities are on the schedule.
