While Esports (competitive video gaming) may not have the same physical demands as traditional athletics, students are exposed to the same qualities of teamwork, sportsmanship, hard work, and leadership. In 2018, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), first recognized Esports as an official sport. Since then, more than 8,600 high schools have started Esports teams. With the rise and growth of Esports in high schools across the country, students that may not have had the interest or opportunity to play on a high school team are now part of a growing community. Therefore, creating larger, more inclusive campus communities and ultimately more successful students.

The explosive growth in the Esports industry is ultimately driven by student interest. Approximately 90 percent of teens play video games and many of these teens are already make money by streaming their play on online platforms like Twitch. Many parents grew up in an age where video games were not the future. However, parents need to understand that there are hundreds of colleges that offer scholarships for Esports; this is literally video gaming that could financially benefit your child.

There has been rapid growth in the Esports industry with the Esports market already surpassing $1 billion. In fact, the 2024 Summer Olympics to be held in Paris, will even feature Esports as demonstration sports. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that many universities now have Esports programs and have spent millions of dollars on Esports arenas. Universities view Esports programs as valuable recruitment tools and are competing for the name recognition and merchandising opportunities that come with having a highly successful Esports team. In fact, the University of California, Irvine was one of the first public universities to adopt an Esports program and is also one of the top Esports universities. The University of California, Irvine has invested in an arena, an annual Esports conference and Esports informatics.

The enormous growth and unmatched student interest has led to many universities offering scholarships to Esports players. In 2019, according to the National Association of Collegiate Esports, $16 million in scholarship money was awarded to top Esports talent and as of December 2022, at least 130 universities offer Esports scholarships.

Esports began as a structured competition for passionate gamers and has rapidly blossomed into a billion-dollar industry. Esports offers many benefits for students. Highly skilled video game professionals are competing in tournaments around the world, making money, and earning scholarships. It has opened new opportunities for students who otherwise would not compete in interscholastic sports. High school students are cashing in on the growing trend…it could very well be your student as well.
