Santa
Catalina Island, lying the closest of the group
of southern Channel Islands to mainland California,
has peaks reaching 2,000 feet above sea level.
The island is 22 miles long and eight miles across
at its greatest width. Located 22 miles off the
coast, Catalina falls under the jurisdiction of
Los Angeles County with most of the island being
owned by the Catalina Island Conservancy. The
year-round population Avalon is approximately
3,600 with almost 85 percent living in the city
of Avalon.
Rich
in history and offering many new things to discover
and explore, Catalina Island is the perfect escape
for visitors from Orange County with its quick
and easy access via boat or plane.
To
protect the Island, the use of motor vehicles
is restricted with only a limited number of registered
cars allowed. Most residents manage their transportation
on golf carts and visitors can hire a taxi from
Catalina Transportation Services. |
