Historic French Park Residential Architecture Tour - Santa Ana

French Park is one of Santa Ana’s oldest neighborhoods and is one of two historic districts in Santa Ana on the National Register of Historic Places. (The other is Floral Park.) Tour-goers will enjoy seeing several large intact "Painted Ladies," brightly painted houses designed in the Queen Anne style from the 1890s, the district's earliest period of development, as well as an assortment of Eclectic and Period Revival residences from the first decades of the 20th century. Learn about the history of the neighborhood and the grass-roots preservation advocacy that protects it and there’s usually an opportunity to get up close

San Juan Capistrano Walking Tour - San Juan Capistrano

The Walking Tour visits two San Juan Capistrano adobes built in the 1790s and the Victorian Pryor House. Hear tales of Buchard the pirate, Juan Flores the bandito, Chola Martina the bruja and much more.

The Historical Society gives tours every Saturday at 1:00 pm starting at the train depot. Tours last about 45 minutes and include the Society’s own collection of historic structures as well as other homes in the Los Rios District. As the oldest, continuously inhabited street in California, Los Rios Street is a charming neighborhood with a colorful history.

Bowers Museum Exhibit - Ancient Arts of China: A 5000 Year Legacy
Ongoing Exhibit

Curated by scholars of Chinese history and culture from the Shanghai Museum, this incredible collection portrays the evolution of Chinese art and culture. Journey back through 5000 years of Chinese history and follow the efflorescence of arts throughout one of the world's oldest living civilizations. From large painted ceramic pots used during the Neolithic period, to sculptures of camels and horses made at the height of the Silk Road, to beautiful embroidered silk court robes and ivory carvings from the 19th century, this exhibition presents the importance of fine art made to be admired during life and depended on in the afterlife.

Join us for a talk with independent curator, writer, and cultural historian TK Smith on the enduring issues surrounding self-taught artists. In dialogue with the current exhibition Jon Serl: As One, As Many, which repositions the work of self-taught painter Jon Serl (b. 1894, Olean, New York; d. 1993, Lake Elsinore, California) beyond the categories of “outsider art” and “folk art,” Smith will discuss the broader “folk art fever” phenomenon, the problems and potentials of the “self-taught” label, and the effects of that label on how such art moves through the world.
