Film Screening: What It Takes + Q&A with Cast & Crew - Santa Ana
Sunday, May 17, 2026
2 pm
American Addiction Centers Hosts Documentary Film Screening on Addiction and Recovery: “What It Takes,” which challenges how people understand addiction, its impact, and the path to recovery.
The film tells two deeply personal narratives: a West Coast family navigating alcoholism and an innovative jail-based program in Chesterfield County, Virginia, which addresses trauma and substance use among incarcerated individuals. The two stories unexpectedly intersect through powerful concert moments, where each story is shaped by a prominent artist whose acts of kindness from the stage become a catalyst for believing that anything is possible.

In dialogue with the current exhibition Jon Serl: As One, As Many, which repositions the work of self-taught painter Jon Serl (b. 1894, Olean, New York; d. 1993, Lake Elsinore, California) beyond the categories of “outsider art” and “folk art,” Smith will discuss the broader “folk art fever” phenomenon, the problems and potentials of the “self-taught” label, and the effects of that label on how such art moves through the world.
