Lift
Off: Beauty Business 2001
by Sara Pentz
The
market for plastic and cosmetic surgery procedures
today exceeds $15 billion per year. Some estimate
that cosmetic surgery procedures represent approximately
$10 billion of industry revenues. From l992
to l998, facelifts, liposuctions and breast
augmentations increased approximately 75%, 260%
and 300%, respectively, according to the American
Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
There
are approximately 5,000 board certified plastic
surgeons, 12,000 dermatologists, 35,000 OBGYN's,
and approximately another 4,000 doctors working
in the cosmetic surgery business. Thousands
of doctors, some without a surgical education
or background, are moving into the field of
elective self-improvement surgery. Dentists
are performing facelifts and OBGYNs are doing
tummy tucks.
More
people are experiencing the benefits of taking
control of their mind and their body to initiate
changes in both. Clearly, it is no longer taboo
to elect surgery for self-improvement.
The
competition for elective surgery in Orange County
is overwhelming. Every day, it seems, a new
skin care salon or day spa opens for business.
Most assuredly, many will be highly successful
as they ride the rising tide of acceptance by
men and women.
Registered
Nurse Sharon Friend is on the leading edge of
the beauty business as a Certified Myotonology
Facial Consultant (sharon@sharonfriend.com)
with offices in Lake Forest at The Vitality
Center and at Salon.Calm in Tustin. She has
used the Myotonology facial toning process in
her business for the past six years. Since l999
her business has expanded by 200%.
"Myotonolgy
facial toning has become popular because it
targets the underlying problems: sagging muscles,"
explains Sharon. "It offers an option that
is less costly, with no pain, no bruising or
scarring. During a session, we are able to isolate
approximately 30 muscles of the face. By stimulating
muscle fibers with low electrical impulses,
we are able to restore proper tone to the facial
muscles."
Skin
care is big business. Just ask Adrienne Brennan
and Scott Fontana. The two paired up in 2000
to create a skin care line known as Freschezza.
Adrienne is a skin care specialist and TV personality,
who has trained with dermatologists and cosmetic
surgeons throughout the U.S. and Europe. Scott,
with over 16 years of experience in the field
of health and beauty, has worked with and on
the rich and famous from Beverly Hills to Newport
Beach.
The
two claim that Freschezza is a unique skin care
line that combines scientific technology with
pure nature to achieve a balanced skin.
With
an Adrienne Brennan behind this new product
introduction, it is sure to be a success. A
former LAPD cop, Adriennes tenacity and
determination would set her apart as a role
model in any business. "I had badly sun
damaged skin and I understood the need,"
she explains. "The main reason I got into
this business is because I couldnt find
anything on the market even in a medical strength
to help me. I wanted a skin care line that would
only take a few minutes in the morning and a
few minutes at night. I wanted to take the mystery
out of skin care. When I was a cop I was best.
I had more felony arrest than anybody. Now,
Im applying all that passion to Freschezza."
Across
from South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, The Spa
& Fitness Club, www.thespascp.com, is a
destination center specializing in massages,
facials, and a variety of body treatments. One
can take a swim, hop into a whirlpool, or spend
a few minutes in the sauna or eucalyptus steam
rooms. In addition, The Club offers premier
equipment and the latest trends in exercise
classes
The
Day Spa business has exploded in the past ten
years as the answer to a need for more than
a one-hour massage and less than a week at a
destination spa. The mission of many of these
centers is to create a place where frenzied
people on the fast track can find peace and
quiet.
